TU puts one shot over the goal. Messiah makes all 5.

I hate PKs, and the fact that they went our way this time doesn't change the fact that I hate to decide the game that way.
Trinity and Messiah have now met 2 times in the NCAAs, played 220 minutes, and there still hasn't been a goal between them. Neither team converted their chances, I thought Messiah probably had more opportunities, but given that they didn't convert theirs, Trinity had several opportunities to win the game themselves. I thought it was very interesting that Trinity used their goalie in their 5 shooters. She missed high over the goal. I'm sure they take PKs in practice and she's proven one of their better shooters, but it seems to me that it's a lot to expect a goalie to go from trying to stop PKs, to shooting her own. It's gotta be tough to get focused on your shot. She almost rectified her error by getting a hand on Messiah's final PK, but she couldn't push it out of the frame. |

I agree regarding PKs. I'd just as soon they play until someone drops.
Strange as it may sound, I can support Coach Key's decision to let the goalie take a shot. For this season, and this particular team and situation, it was the right thing to do. The goalie has been rock steady and a remarkable competitor and leader during a season when, frankly, the team didn't always show up mentally prepared. Maybe it wasn't the best tactical choice...and it won't happen again, but it was the right choice for a program that cares deeply for its players. We will keep winning! Kudus to the women for a good season and a great post-season tournament run! Not to mention scaring the bejeebers out of Messiah. |

Quote: Well, you obviously know the program better than I, so I respect your opinion. And I also respect the fact that a coach knows their players way better than any observer and is always doing what they believe gives their team the best chance. So I'm not really here to be critical. I've always said that just because a particular decision didn't work out doesn't necessarily make it a bad move. I just think that is WAY too much to put on one player's shoulders, particularly one who doesn't take shots in a game under normal circumstances, let alone with so much on the line. I just don't like hanging the whole game on one person, which is what you do when you have your keeper shoot in that situation. I want my goalie spending all her concentration on keeping one of Messiah's shots out of the net, not thinking about her own shot. I think if I was going to have my keeper shoot in the first 5, I'd have them go first if we were first to shoot, that way they don't have to turn the switch. They can take their shot and be done with it. But, I'm not the coach of a highly successful program, I'm just a fan, so my 2 cents is worth just about that. |
