NCAA Rules, Policies, Publications, and News Catch-All |

I thought it might be good to have a thread with links to all NCAA Publications and Information relevant to Division III Men's Soccer, that could also serve as the place to share and discuss relevant NCAA news, especially changes to rules or policy. This thread can point people to where they can find out about how the NCAA Regional Rankings are done or what the criteria are for tournament selections. It can also point the way to which schools are in Pool A (AQ)/Pool C and which are in Pool B, or what the current substitution re-entry rules are. Anything to do with NCAA policy, rules, committees, etc. could be collected here for easy reference.

I think the NCAA runs their regional poll for four weeks before the tournament. That would mean we should see it in about 2 weeks.

Ahh. Good intentions. But then things got busy around here. I meant to do more with this thread. SOme interesting changes that maybe I can highlight later this week.

Q-o-W Index Eliminated and other Selection Criteria Chan | #6
|
Quality-of-Wins Index Eliminated and other Changes to Selection Criteria
Well, the Quality-of-Wins Index has been scrapped, being the major change to the selection (and ranking) criteria. The general 2007-08 NCAA Division III Manual foreshadowed this when it was released on-line a few weeks ago, but I wanted to wait for the 2007 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships Handbook to be released to confirm that indeed the Q-o-W Index was not going to be used anymore. There's also a few very minor changes, and another small but perhaps significant change. Here's the changes I noted to the Selection (and ranking) criteria listed on page 16 of the Men's Soccer Championships Handbook. Primary Criteria: (1) "Quality-of-Wins-Index (only contests versus regional competition)" is replaced by "Strength-of-schedule (only contests versus regional competition)". The "Strength-of-schedule" includes the opponents average winning percentage (OWP) and the opponents opponents average winning percentage (OOWP). These percentages aren't combined and/or converted into any rating or ranking index value. And unlike the Q-o-W Index, there is no mathematucal formula to apply a teams results against the schedule to result in a rating or ranking index value to compare schools. Explanation for the calculation of the OWP and OOWP is given in Appendix A of the Handbook. Two things to note: (a) it is the average of the winning percentages of all opponents, not the winning percentage of the combined record of all opponents (that is, it's not weighted by number of games played per opponent), and (b) each opponent's winning percentage is based on their record excluding the game against the school who's strength of schedule is being determined. The OOWP is simply the average of the OWPs for each opponent. Secondary Criteria: (2) "Results versus Division III teams ranked in other regions" revised/reworded to say "Results versus all Division III ranked teams." This means that matches versus ranked teams from a school's region will also be considered as part of this criteria. I can't see this making an impact because "in-region results versus regionally ranked teams" is already a primary criteria and the secondary criteria would only be used in case the primary criteria didn't result in a decision. (3) "Results versus common out-of-region opponents" revised/reworded to say "Results versus all common opponents." As I said for the above change, I don't see this making a difference as "In-region results versus common regional opponents" is already a primary criteria. (4) "Overall Division III Quality of Wins" revised to "Overall DIII Strength of Schedule" to reflect the major change in the primary criteria. (5) Potential new criteria: "Should a committee find that evaluation of a teams win-loss percentage during the last 25 percent of the season is applicable (i.e., end of season performance), it may adopt such criteria with approval from the championships committee." So, if everything else being equal, the committee can go with the currently hotter team IF they sought approval from the general D-III championships committee to include this criteria. The full list of current criteria is as follows (see page 16 of the Men's Soccer Championships Handbook): Quote: |

I have updated all the links to NCAA publications in the second post of the thread.
The link of most interest is the 2008 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships Handbook. I noted no change in the Selection Criteria (Primary and Secondary) form last year, so the above post remains accurate. As Iron Sharpens Iron

2009 D-III Men's Soccer Programs | #9
|
2009 D-III MEN'S SOCCER PROGRAMS
Summary :: Total number of D-III men's soccer programs increases by two to 404*, of which 385** are eligible for the tournament :: One school has completed it's 3-year re-classification period out of D-III to D-II and is no longer a D-III member :: One school is in the 4-year reclassification process to D-III and inelgible for the tournament :: Three schools are in the 3-year re-classification process to D-II and ineligible for the tournament***** :: Three schools have completed their 4-year provisional membership period and are now eligible for the tournament :: Ten schools continue their provisional membership (five enter 4th year, two enter 3rd year, two enter 2nd year, and one has their status under review****) :: Three schools have been accepted to begin the 4-year provisional membership period Breakdown Division III men's soccer programs: 404* Institutions eligible for NCAA D-III championship: 385** Completed 4-year Provisional Membership: 3 (Mitchell College-NECC, SUNY-Morrisville-NEAC; Presentation-UMAC) Provisional Membership - 4-year period (not eligible for the championship): 13 . Entering 4th year: 5 (Lancaster Bible-independent, Lyndon St.-NAC, North Central-independent, PSU-Harrisburg-NEAC***, St. Vincent-Presidents') . Status under review: 1 (La Sierra****) . Entering 3rd year: 2 (Franciscan-AMCC, Geneva-Presidents') . Entering 2nd year: 2 (Spalding-SLIAC, SUNY-Cobleskill-NEAC) . Entering 1st year: 3 (Berry-independent, Covenant-independent, PSU-Abington-NEAC) Declared NAIA (not eligible for the NCAA championship): 2 (Menlo-independent, Northland-UMAC) Reclassifying to D-III - 4-year period (not eligible for the NCAA championship): 1 . Entering 3rd year: 1 (Birmingham-Southern-SCAC) Reclassifying to D-II - 3-year period (not eligible for the NCAA championship): 3***** . Entering 3rd Year: 1 (Lincoln-independent) . Entering 2nd Year: 2 (Maryville-St. Louis-GLVC, CSU-East Bay-CCAA) Completed 3-Year Reclassification to D-II: 1 (Lake Erie-independent) *Depending on whether the schools in the reclassification process to D-II are still considered D-III programs this could range from 401 to 404. I can't figure out the basis for this determination as I've seen reclassifying schools included and not included. The summary of the regional realignement for 2009 does not include Maryville-St. Louis at all, but lists CSU-East Bay as a tournament eligible Pool B school and Lincoln as an ineligble Pool B school due to reclassification. These types of communication inconsistencies/error are somewhat common for the NCAA (at least D-III men's soccer). So I'm not sure the release of the 2009 D-III Men's Soccer Championship Handbook will provide any clarity as last year's handbook still listed Maryville as an eligible Pool A school and CSU-East Bay as an eligble Pool B school despite both being in the reclassification process to D-II which I believe meant they were ineligible. **does not include CSU-East Bay which is reclassifying to D-II (or any other reclassifying schools) ***received approval to advance from the 2nd to 4th year of provisional membership. ****repeated the 3rd year of provisional membership in 2008-09 and currently is under review *****Birmingham Southern is entering D-III and Lincoln, Maryville-St.Louis, CSU-East Bay are leaving for D-II. Regional Re-Alignment for 2009 | #10
|
NEW REGIONAL ALIGNMENT FOR 2009 A new regional alignment (that was approved back in 2008) goes into effect starting this year (2009/10). The realignment creates a bit more balance in the
number of teams within in each region, except for New England which remains large. It also is coordinated with women's soccer (which went from seven to
eight regions) to have schools in the same region for both men's and women's teams.

2009 Championship - Field Size / AQ's / Pool B / Pool C | #11
|
Well, the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer
Championship Handbook [NOTE: the handbook has been updated four times and the original edition is no longer
available] has finally been made available and what follows is their numbers and calculations of the tournament field. It's a little
different from my numbers. However, I have found many errors and inconsistencies in the handbook (more than most years, and there's always some)
and in a subsequent post will list them and see if I still stand by my distribution of berths or the handbook's. But here is what the handbook is
saying for now.
Field: 59 Pool A (AQ): 39 Pool B: 3 Pool C: 17 2009 Division III Men's Soccer Sponsorship Data: [EDIT: The handbook has been updated three times since I wrote this, and I am not sure what all has been changed, but many corrections have been made to the Appendices. However, the information above remains the same. As I demonstrate below I think the Sponsorship Data summary has errors, but the Championship Field breakdown is correct.] Well, despite all the discrepancies, inconsistencies, omissions, and errors that are to be found in the handbook, I do think that the one number that really
matters, the number of Pool B berths, is correct as 3 . . . just barely. I was short two Pool B schools in my breakdown in the opening post, and that resulted
in a calculation of just 2 Pool B berths. As it stands, if there are 28 Pool B schools as I think is the case, there are just enough to hold onto that third
berth. One less and it'd be down to two.
[NOTE: The handbook has been updated four times and some of the errors and discrepancies I found have been corrected since
I first wrote this.]
[2] Eligible Pool B teams: pg.13 - 21, App.D - [3] Provisional institutions (not eligible for the championship): pg.13 - 13, App. D - [6] The above discrepancies (#1 - #5) result in the following differences in sums:
NOTE: What follows are MY updates and corrections. REGION-BY-REGION BREAKDOWN (update/correction of Appendix D)
[Since the Sponsorship Data summary has not changed in any subsequent updates, I still think the Handbook is incorrect and that the following Sponsorship Data, updated for (a) Northland (UMAC/North/Pool B) no longer being NAIA-declared, (b) addition of Wheelock (NECC/New England/Pool B), addition of Rosemont (CSAC/Mid-Atlantic/PoolA-C), is more accurate. However, my resulting Championship Field breakdown is the same as given in the Handbook.] 2009 Division III Men's Soccer Sponsorship Data:
