We understand, but it hurts.
I can only think of one who can be the next one, and I doubt they can pull him away from where he is now. We'll see |

I'm a bit surprised, but can only wish Coach all the best and thank him for the past 12 years. I might have more thoughts and statistics later, but for
now I will simply re-post what I wrote over at BigSoccer.com where the news hadn't made it yet.
Dave Brandt Messiah College
Thank you, Coach Brandt . . . for the memories, the style of play, the victories and titles, and for doing things the right way and in harmony with the objectives and ethos of the college and D-III student-athletics. ** - This is the record being used in the artciles/press releases, but I think a tie got left out of the record. And I'm actually surprised that they are using 26 losses, because that matches my records and not the website archives which count the PK elimination to JHU in 1998 as a tie instead of a loss. I counted it as a loss because that was before they changed the ruling on how to record games decided by PK's. Articles/Press Releases: 284 Games, 246-26-12 (.887) Flying Weasel: 285 Games, 246-26-13 (.886) Website Archives: 286 Games, 247-25-14 (.891) - Incorrectly has extra game and win in 2006, and counts PK elimination to JHU as tie instead of loss. But either way, one heck of an impressive run. As Iron Sharpens Iron

True Fantastic One, I guess I was just a little bit off!
Sad day for Messiah soccer...but at some point some D1 program was going to make him the Godfather offer, one that he couldn't refuse. It's also a sad day for the players who expected to play for him for all 4 years, and for the player alums who saw a big part of the family that they love and respect pulled away. No matter what it will always be different now, and that's a tough development for them. On the other hand, this obviously makes for some intrigue and discussion as far as who will dare to try and fill those huge shoes, how this effects this year's recruit class, if it changes the world famous style of play, and what it does to pet players who might be in for a rude awakening if the next coach doesn't feel quite the same way about them as DB did. But those are probably all questions for another day. |

Candidates | #9 | ||

So I guess the question that needs to be asked now is.......................
Who are the likely candidates to replace The Legend? Who will be the next Messiah head coach? |

I would imagine that former Messiah player and current F&M head coach Dan Wagner will be (or was) among the first calls that Messiah makes (or made).

Wagner: not likely | #12 | ||

I'd be shocked if Wagner was even interested. He's starting his own thing at F&M and seems to be happy there.

Brad McCarty, Jason Spodnik, and Dan Wagner are some of the obvious considerations. And there are other former players who are coaching (e.g. Mark Bassett at
Kings).
It does seem like Dan Wagner is creating something special at F&M that goes beyond what happens on the field, so he might not have any reason to be looking to move. But I'd be surprised if possible candidates like him were not giving it some thought no matter how good their current situation might be. I could certainly understand reasons to stop considering it and not applying, but to have no interest and not think about it I would find hard to imagine. I wonder if Scott Frey (Messiah women's coach) would consider leaving one of the elite women's programs and move back to coaching men. He was men's coach at Alma College (MI) for 7 years (1993-99) before coming back to Messiah as women's coach. And he was successful as men's coach at Alma, making that program competitive and finally reaching the NCAA's in his last 3 seasons there, including a surprise run to the Final Four in his last year (1999) which included a win over Trinity (Tx.) in the quartefinals before bowing out to unbeatable St. Lawrence in the semifinals (just as Messiah had done the previous weekend). What does everyone think? Will the new coach defintely come from within the Messiah soccer family? Does an outsider have a realistic chance if one (or more) of the more obvious possibilites from with nthe Messiah soccer family applies for the job? What outsiders might be legitamate options both in terms of their resume and fit with the college? As Iron Sharpens Iron |

It won't be an outsider.... my thoughts... they know exactly who they want!

I heard Ben Jordan was in the running due to his fantastic mustache abilities.
In all seriousness though, I'm with fantasticone, if everything works out, I imagine they know who they want. I find it hard to believe that Coach would leave the program not knowing in who's hands he'd be leaving it. |

FantO and Stage-
From the all the conversations I've heard in the last few days from people in and around the program, there is obviously a plan and an obvious choice from players, alums, and even DB. Now for those of us that have Messiah-soccer flowing through our veins, it's time to pray that "obvious choice" comes back home to the Falcon nest |

BigBreeches -
Are you saying that there is a no-brainer, consensus candidate from off campus? If that is what you are saying, I'm a little surprised. Is that just your preference/spin, or is there actually something to it? I would venture to guess that there is a very short list, and that even after a "national search" that list won't be growing any longer. |

Falcon crazy-
It's probably a little of both (preference and substance). Yes, there is an overwhelming majority of the team that have a clear #1 and some players have had follow up conversations with DB that know he has a plan and a preference. But, there is a committee and they are taking applications so who knows who is in charge of this hire and if they will listen to players or a departing coach. I highly doubt DB is on the committee. |

I think that you have to be very careful about what players are saying, alumni etc. There is a national search in place and there will be players on the comm
(at least 2). Please remember that Coach Brandt has made his preferences known, but also remember that because he has made a recommendation about who he thinks
would do a good job, etc. It is going to be a decision that a comm. makes, it is not his call to determine who comes next. Also, you have to remember that just
because the former coach has his ideas, it does not mean that some will even apply and agree to the terms, etc.
There are many unknowns here... but if I was a betting man, I would out my money on 1 or 3 guys.... But I have no idea of who is in the pool.... |

Come on...
They posted the job and are forming committees with two players and all of that good stuff, but it comes down to the next coach either being Spod or Shag. The rest of it is just the formalities that you're required to participate in when hiring for a prominent position in a major organization like Messiah College. |
